Quick clarification: do you lose all gained but unspent hero points at the end of the session? It says that you start off each session with one, so I assume so, but it seems kind of mean to take away the points a player has earned towards the end of a session.

Hero Points
hero points
That's the way I've played.
Indeed.
Fortunately, that also means that the GM lose all his Danger Points.
I guess you could do an exception if a session ended abrutly, say in a middle of a battle, for some reason but otherwise it makes senses in 2nd Edition since Hero Points kinda rains from everywhere.
Actually Heroes and Villains gave DM way to use unspent Danger Pool at end of session to advance Villain stories, while it did not give any compensation to Heroes losing their Hero Points. This is main reason I made House Rule that Hero Poinsta re not lost, but you gain 1 or 2 Hero Points. That way those who did not have their FInest Hour in session could use them to do things in next Stories.
Yep, Hero Points are "use them or lose them." Anything you've got left over when the session ends are lost. The Advantage Valiant Spirit is the sole exception thus far, allowing a Hero to start each session with two Hero Points.
Same holds true for Danger Points, so it ultimately balances out.

LIke I said earlier that is not true, as unspent Hero Points are truly lost, but DM can spend his points at end of session to advance Villain stories. Your saying is literally true, except DM has no points to lose as he can spent them. Heroes will lose them.
