A wee note on the Allies etc. In 1E there was the Contact advantage. This varied from 1 to 3 points, with an optional +2 cost. 1 point contacts were called informants, because they just told you stuff in exchange for money. 2 point contacts were confidants: they'd do things for you but not risk themselves much. 3 point contacts were allies who would put themselves at risk to help you. So I'd suggest that Ally is 2 and Confidant 1
You noticed that Roberto Gallo's backgrounds changed from v1 to v2. I actually fed back on that, since I noticed he had the exact same pair of backgrounds as Aleksy, which seemed wrong. I think they were just a typo in
Totally forgot reading that. This is why you are a Doctor.
It could very well still be a 5 point advantage and the only bonus to come from the background. Same could be said for Sorte.
From what Wick has said throughout the kickstarter, I get the impression that Sorcery and Swordsmanship won't cost points per se. They may just be tied to a background. One of the issues many people had with 1st edition was that both of those options cost too many points at creation.
And what Rob's said is that each Background comes with ~5 points worth of advantages. Then again, I think that the Duellist's Guild membership and the Left-handed come attached to the Ambrogia Fencing Academy.
I don't see issue with the point cost of either ability in the old system. Used with strategy, the sword abilities DO make a better combatant than a player that sinks everything into standard combat knacks. You just have to find the combos in each school. Sorcery can be a huge game breaker and deserves to be expensive.
Most complaints came from players that got mad the costs prevented you from reasonably doing both. And I have seen what a vesten rune mage with hafdansson ( pretty sure i mis-spelled that) can do at master level, it's fierce.
But this is a very old argument and you will end up on one side or the other with either being valid. Is it better in this game for a character to be able to do everything or should that character select a handful of things to be great at while ignoring the rest.
I have players who panic if they don't have every skill available. They would rather suffer from low stats across the board than risk making any check with an unskilled penalty.
I have players that gather lengthy lists of advantages and ignore all but basic skills feeling the need to gather bonus dice for every check down the road.
Some special snowflake inventors feel the need to be wizard duelists and sink the points in those talents.
Some damn the torpedoes, max out traits and get by on bravado and extra wounds.
A large chunk of gamers take one skill regardless of it fitting the character out of superstition that having it means you will never need it (for most, that skill is swimming)
Personally, I think every character in 7th sea should have an unarmed combat knack of some sort AND Athlete. Because you will be running, leaping and dodging stuff.
None of us are wrong. It's just what works for you. It is also a far better way of doing things than old D&D where you carried the wizard until the wizard could carry everybody else.

I have a Vendel League PC who runs several corporations and is a representative in the Leauge for the Swordsman's Guild that might disagree with you. Her only Martial Skill is Firearms at rank 2 Attack (yes she's representing the SG despite not being a swordsman, but that's mainly because she and Knute have an...understanding. Since she rolls...let's say really well for Charm, Intimidation, Oratory, Seduction, etc...she's not particularly concerned about having to fight her way out of anything; that's what all those swordsmen she hires - or purrs softly into their ears - are for.)

Seriously, there is an outrageous amount of running involved.

Adventuring generally involves a ridiculous amount of running for your life (or someone else's life).
