I was just curious which nations interest other players the most. Feel free to explain why in the comments section.

I'm personally a fan of Inismore because the Inish strike me as perpetual underdogs and I find that aspect appealing. I love Montaigne as well.

My heart will always stand with King Sandoval and Altamira.  Doesn't matter what character I play and in the new game that will likely be a Sarmatian.

That's a tough one... I like what I've seen so far of this version of Castille, a lot, but I've to say that I really like the Sarmatian Commonwealth... there're a lot of interesting things going on there...

I used to be a big fan of the Avalon Isles as a whole... and Montaigne... ugh... can't stand them... or their nobility, at least...

DaWaterRat's picture

Can't pick one. :) I love them all for different reasons (though I've never used Usurra to her potential, and I haven't got a feel for the Commonwealth yet.) Some for personal reasons (my family is German and Irish, so Eisen and Inishmore will always be special to me.) Some just spark my imagination with potential (Castille, Montaigne, Vodacce) And some because I just find them fun (pretty much everyone else.)

If forced at sword point, I would have to say the Glamour Isles (I'm a bit of an Anglophile, sorry), but I won't get any more specific than that.

Castille's definitely got a lot going for it. It might have more built-in plot threads than any other nation.

  • The war with Montaigne
  • Political intrigue involving King Sandoval and his denial of Rex Castileum
  • Cardinal Verdugo and the Inquisition
  • The emergence of Los Vagabundos
  • Proximity to La Bucca and the buccaneers

My favorite 7th Sea character was half-Castillian. He was a blast to play.

I like "Avalon" beause it's really 3 Nations and you can have a lot of variety just within that one nation.

Yes, Avalon gets the 3-for-1 freebie which mirrors how England, Scotland and Wales and even northern Ireland each get their unique football teams in the Euros but countries like Spain only get one (the Catalonians of Castille must merge Barcelona with Real Madrid).

???
I've zero interest on futbol and the rules for participating in the "Euros", but both Ireland and Scotland are still defined as countries, while Catauña is defined as 1 of the 50 provinces of Spain... Not the same case at all...

I voted Avalon because Shide!

It's a tough call for me, but I'd have to pick Eisen as the top.

My first character was an Eisen, my favorite secret society would have to be the classic Die Kreuzritter (but the new one is on my radar), and there's just something about a nation that not only has to fight mundane issues, but also compete against major supernatural issues. So much of classic Eisen is still here in the second edition and very little has changed (and most of the changes make it darker, which is interesting to me).

I really do love just about every part of Theah (even if the Montaigne nobility are bothersome and Ussura has odd information), but I do wish there was more to go off of for the Sarmatian Commonwealth. I'm really looking forward to hearing more about it in the future books.

Highland Marches because kilts.

I would say the Commonwealth is my second favorite because the political system is so interesting to me. Especially since it is so new in setting.

Voddace is a close third behind the Commonwealth for the Fate Witches.

Henry de Veuve's picture

Vodacce.  Because nothing says disasterously complicated intrigue going awry quite like "angry Fate Witch".

(That said, there are no nations that I'm particularly disinterested in trying at least once.)

I have to say that I really, really like the introduction of the Sarmatian Commonwealth. As a GM, I think Sarmatia is fresh and new. I didn't know anything about Polish/Lithuanian history prior to this, and my recent reading on Wikipedia was fascinating!  I think Sarmatia is a great location for campaigns because of the sheer complexity of the politics and different factions. You can have progressives versus traditionalists, Vaticine versus Sanderis followers, corrupt nobles versus Golden Liberty idealists... the list goes on!

Second, since the book mentions that refugees from many nations have come to the Commonwealth after Golden Liberty was declared (see the "Expatriate" background), the Commonwealth is a good place for multi-national player groups.

Third, I really like the Sabat swordsman school. :)

And finally, I like the archetypes of the Western and Eastern heroes from Sarmatia in the book. The Western hero is idealistic and progressive at the same time embracing the ancient idea of chivalry and the modern idea of rights for all citizens. The Eastern hero is the cynical pragmatist, knowing that sometimes you need a more, ah, pragmatic approach..but still determined to do good. I plan to play a Western Sarmatian duelist hero at the first opportunity to do so, as this is exactly the kind of swashbuckling character that greatly appeals to me. :D

Hello
Tell me, please, is the Sarmatian Commonwealth contains some analogue of ukrainian Cossacks?

Evan Sageser's picture

Cossack appears to be a background associated with the Ussurans. Which to be fair, makes sense. The cossacks, while not ethnically homogenous, tend to have some closer associations with Russia than Poland Lithuania. (Not to mention that Ukraine was very ethnically Russian at the time)

There's not overwhelming details about cossacks in 2e, but assuming that they are like they are in history (an ethnically diverse group on the steppes, similar in some ways to American Cowboys) one could probably play a "Sarmatian" Cossack by playing an Ussuran, taking the Cossack background and then taking the Foreign-born advantage to model your close ties to the Commonwealth despite being raised in the (mechanically Ussuran) Cossack culture.

Thanks for information!

Avalon, I like the idea of "New Knights" and perhaps some expatriots are knights but don't know it yet.  I might run a campaign where at least one story is finding these errant knights and awakening them.

So many campaigns, so little time.

Tilly Bomas's picture

I will always be a fan of Cathay, but that isn't quite out yet :P  gonna have to back that when it gets kickstarted.  But I was super happy to hear about the Commonwealth, and I am glad it was given some real thought.  I also am glad they kept the duel religion, one being 'Christan'and the other "Pagen".  It is allot of fun.  And I will say, what I have read thus far about their sorcery, it is SCARY....

Ron Strong's picture

It's really close between Vodacce, Avalon and the Sarmatian Commonwealth. I like Avalon, the interplay between the three kingdoms suggests a lot of ideas to me and so do The Sidhe. I like the Sarmatian Commonwealth just because I think their sorcery is really cool. But in the end, I have to give it (barely) to Vodacce. I could see a hell of a campaign being formed out of the intrigues of the various princes, especially when you throw Sophia's Daughters into the mix. So Vodacce, but barely.

For me, it's always been Castille, with Avalon a distant second.  Always have a fondness for Zorro while growing up, and 1e Castille really scratched that particular itch, as it was very easy to play a member of Los Vagos who fought against the corruption of the Inquisition or the oppresion of the Montaigne occupation.  Not to mention Inigo Montoya being my favorite character from the Princess Bride by far.

And to be honest, I just made a Jaraguan/Rahuri character for the upcoming game I'm about to play, so indeed, I might be a lyin' scoundrel too.
