Ships and Crew

I read the sailing chapter last night and I'm very happy that we have different kinds of ships and some description about them. I also love that they tell you how many people you need as crew.

Now, I am clueless when it comes down to ships and I remember having trouble with the first edition about this. They say 10 crew is enough and sounds solid to me but, I guess a Schooner is tiny compared to a Man-of-war, right? If 10 crew is enough I take it that is the average crew for a Brig or a Frigate as they seem to be the most used ships? Shouldn't a Schooner have less crew and a Man-of-war have way more? 

I read somewhere that even big ships don't need as much crew as people normally believe but I don't know if this is true or not.

There is ainimum you need to operate and a much different number to fully man in shifts. 10 people should be able to handle any boat in the water. But if you want someone to get rest, handle each cannon, be available to tie down sails while still steering, etc. They will need more hands. This again is something you can hand wave as recruit a crew and use the wealth point to cover the cost.

Did you find any information about how many crew members are normally used for each kind of ship? How did you do it when you ran first ed?

I hand waved it. The crew was there to handle what the players were not interested in dealing with. I had a handful of key crewmen named and given duties so they could consult when they got stuck. If my plot needed them to be in a pinch because they couldn't afford to pay the crew or were short men, I could narrate a reason and go from there. Outside of that, we just worked with the assumption that guns and sails were manned and it was time to have an adventure.
